Selecting Your CPA Firm
Get to know the CPA firm that's right for you.
Every financial situation is unique. Here's seven easy steps to finding a CPA firm that's right for you.
- Compile a list of candidates. Ask trusted friends and colleagues to recommend a CPA firm — one with a reputation for favorable results. Call financial professional societies for referrals. If necessary, look in the Yellow Pages.
- Schedule an interview with the candidates. (Most CPA firms offer a one-hour evaluation appointment, free of charge.)
- Prepare a list of detailed questions that relate to your particular problem, situation and needs. (Be very specific.) Also ask some standard questions during each interview:
- Why does the firm want your business? (Is the firm familiar
with the intricacies of your business or problem?)
- How big is the firm? (Is it large or small enough?)
- What experience and educational background — including
continuing education — have firm members acquired? (Are
you impressed, especially in relationship to your specialized
needs?)
- What computing technology does the firm use? (Does it fit
your immediate or anticipated technology profile?)
- In what format does the firm accept accounting
information? (Is the format satisfactory?)
- What are the fee structures and billing policies? (Do they
suit you?)
- Ask if the candidate has any questions for you. (Are the questions sincere and thoughtful? Do they indicate interest in your financial success?)
- Evaluate the personal "chemistry." (Do you share similar financial values? Are you able to communicate easily?)
- Consider the firm's location. (Is it convenient?)
- After you've interviewed all the potential firms, choose the best! (Fishman & Company, P.C.!)
